Another Holiday....

I've been up since 5:30 am and I can't think of a better way to start the day than to write a post. It keeps me off the streets and out of trouble and means I can sit here a while longer with my coffee and cigarettes and postpone the time when I really have to get the show on the road. I should be hopping in the shower now and washing my hair, because it's flattened on one side and sticking up on the other, but I have time enough to do that, as long as the dog does not suddenly start to rush me.

However, he is sound asleep beside me and, even though I've put down his food, he is not showing the least amount of interest in it and the cats are eating it and pretty soon Gandhi will barf all over the kitchen floor. Toby has already walked away from it. Oh, so has Gandhi now. We'll see what happens.

Cats don't eat themselves silly like dogs do. Dogs don't stop eating until it's all gone, even if they are full. At least, that's been my experience. I often see the dog back away from his dish as if he's had enough and then go back to eat the last little bit. Like greedy people do.

Speaking of greediness, I've gained 11 kilos over the past year and I have to figure out a way to get rid of them. The problem is that I'm limited in what I can eat, but of the things I can eat, I eat a lot, so I actually don't eat very healthy. I need to go back to have my gastric band filled some more to limit the things I'm overindulging in now and be more picky about what I do eat.

I would really like to eat a whole wheat sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes and some lunch meat, but that is impossible. I also can't eat an apple or an orange or a banana or a bunch of grapes. So instead I eat porridge and yogurt and pudding in copious amounts to give me a full feeling, which sort of defeats the purpose of the gastric band.

That's why I have been thinking of having the gastric band removed so that I may eat healthier and actually loose weight because of it. I eat the wrong things now when I'm hungry. Feedback is welcome on this, keeping in mind that I was a slender person until the age of forty when I started taking all my medications and gained all that weight.

It's a subject that's been weighing heavy on my mind, because I see how my stomach is growing and I feel relieved talking about it.

Well, now I am going to take a shower, so this is just a little bitty post, but you can't win them all.

Have a good Whitsunday. The sun is shining here.

Ciao...

Funny really - I remember when I met you, most of your blog was concerned with what weight loss you were making and how much you could eat. You lost a huge amount of weight.
Now - from what you write, it sounds as if you have found a way of eating smaller amounts of food at one time but only eating treats and extremely high-calorie foods, so you are getting fatter and not getting the nutrition you need.
The only way you can overcome that, Irene is by shopping differently.
Before you go out, think carefully about what you should eat, write a list and stick to your list in the shop. Don't buy ANY treats at all. Be your strict Calvinist side in food shops.
The reason I say that is that you are out and about a lot and are tempted by treats all the time. If you also have them at home you have no chance of losing weight again. If the food in your house is not tempting and naughty, that at least limits what you can do at home.
What do you think about that suggestion?
You seem to get plenty of exercise, but maybe you can look at that as well. Walk faster when you're out, or go for more walks without Jesker so you can really walk quickly? Is it possible to walk back home from therapy? To make more journeys to the shop without the bicycle? All possibilities, but whether they are feasible only you can tell.

Frances has said it beautifully Irene. Shopping with health in mind is what you need to do instead of treating yourself.

Perhaps a small mental adjustment is needed. The good healthy food is your treat.

You were doing so well before and having a gastric band is the whole point of losing weight isn't it?

I think a little more exercise as well. More walking. That's the best.

The thing is - those meds defeat almost everything you do. They pile on the pounds no matter what. It's disheartening and feels like a futile battle. Chin up dear friend. You'll do it.

Hm, I can't imagine what it's like to live with a gastric band because what I find hard about diets is that I can't eat everything when I like it. I actually live best when I let myself choose freely what to eat, when to eat it and stop when I'm full. That's one thing I have to learn still, to eat only when I'm hungry and stop when I feel full.

I can't really tell you to get rid of the gastric band or not, it depends what and how much you'd be eating without it. Are you sure you'd eat healthy foods mostly?

I did notice, however, that you eat a lot of foods that aren't really healthy at all. The Cupa Soup thingies have next to no nutritional value (apart from calories and salt) and you'd be better off making yourself a small batch of vegetable soup from scratch, freeze some of it and eat that. Question is, do you have time to put in the work?

Something Frances and aims have said is important, though: Exercise. It'll help immensely with losing weight and now that the weather is improving it should be easier for you to get more exercise in.

Afraid there's no simple answer, it's up to you. But I'm sure all the comments you'll get on this post will help you make a decision. :-)

we're vegetarian and one thing i notice about these veg types is the huge quantities of fruit and veg they can sink. i guess meat gives folk a full feeling? you have to eat a lot of veggies to match, also cos the nutrition has to come from a much wider range. so yes, your comment about needing bulk would probably be satisfied by band removal and 100 kilo of veg! (but that's got to be healthier, no?!)

I cannot advise anything. I am as big as a cow! Not happy with it but have not had a urge to change my ways.
