How to spend my time.

Since I've quit smoking I have to  find all sorts of way to spend my time that I normally waste smoking cigarettes while contemplating my navel drinking cups of coffee. So you see I have to fill my time as creatively as I can and as a result I have become very organized. I do realize that these two concepts don't necessarily have the same meaning. I should say that I have become more practical and have my household running better.

I've put more structure in my day, although because of the regular walks with Tyke it already had a lot of that. I am the kind of person who does like a certain amount of predictability in which to perform my spontaneous actions.I make the walks unpredictable and like to surprise Tyke by veering off course and having him discover new trees to pee against and meeting new dogs to greet along the way.

I look forward to my meals, especially now that I've pretty much worked out how I'm going to react to the different foods and which ones I will be able to eat by myself and which in polite ompany because of the sound effects. Some foods are absolutely taboo and I never eat them and it's best if my meals are as plain and simple as possible, although varied too. .

They have become steady points to plan my day around and instead of sitting in my armchair very carefully balancing my plate on my lap, I now sit at the table and very neatly eat my food as if I am in a restaurant and take my time eating it.  Tyke sits on a chair beside me and gets the occasinal morsel so we have dinner together and that makes it more enjoyable and cozy.

I do wash the dishes almost immediately after I have used them. I find I have all sorts of time and motivation for that now. Even the dishes and the amount of them are very predictable so I stand for no surprises.

I was already good at doing the laundry but I'm even better now and you wouldn't believe how much better it smells now after it's dried on the clothing rack. All this time the smell of smoke had been permeating it. I'm going to wash all of my clothes and have them all smell heavenly. I want it to be a joy when I open my suitcase when I get to Houston. I will be busy doing laundry for a while.

My goodness, Irene. It seems the changes in your life are coming thick and fast. But they all sound so good.

I agree that having some firm points in one's day is so helpful. I actually have my day well planned. But usually after doing about one thing, I get sidetracked, and never get back to the plan.

Perhaps it is Tyke who helps you stay planned. Maybe I need a Tyke. Or need to get my Sadie back from the country.

I simply cannot get over how you have taken our life in hand.
Well done, girl!

I like the bit about 'sound effects', there are a few things I cannot eat and certainly never before I go into polite company.

I know what you mean about liking structure and predictability in your day, because I function best like that too. Not that I can't take some spontaneity and variation, but I do feel better and more on top of life when some things are organized and some activities are preplanned. Having a Tyke would be the icing on the cake for me!

I am a newbie to routine as I thought creative spirits didn't need one but yes we do, to free us up.

I love how you describe your laundry. As an ex-smoker myself I had no idea how badly I stunk until after I quit and could smell other smokers. Egads! I even had to wash all my drapes and slipcovers to get rid of the smell....

You go gurl.
